What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed for clinical drug dosing but have become widely used as general health reference points. Each formula calculates a target weight based on height and gender, typically assuming a medium frame.

The four formulas

Devine (1974): Men = 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft; Women = 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft. The most widely used formula.
Robinson (1983): Men = 52kg + 1.9kg/inch; Women = 49kg + 1.7kg/inch.
Miller (1983): Men = 56.2kg + 1.41kg/inch; Women = 53.1kg + 1.36kg/inch.
Hamwi (1964): Men = 48kg + 2.7kg/inch; Women = 45.5kg + 2.2kg/inch.

Limitations

IBW formulas don't account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition. A muscular athlete may weigh more than their "ideal" without being unhealthy. Use these as rough guides alongside BMI, body fat percentage, and overall health markers.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator presents multiple established ideal body weight formulas:
Devine (1974): Men = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; Women = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
Robinson (1983): Men = 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch; Women = 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch.
Miller (1983): Men = 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch; Women = 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch.
Hamwi (1964): Men = 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch; Women = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch.

The healthy BMI range (18.5โ€“24.9) is also shown for comparison. These formulas are estimates and do not account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

The Devine formula is the most widely used and cited. However, all four formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) are estimates with limitations โ€” none accounts for body composition, muscle mass, or frame size. The BMI-based healthy weight range (18.5โ€“24.9) provides a broader, evidence-based target.

What is a healthy weight range for my height?

The WHO healthy BMI range of 18.5โ€“24.9 translates to a weight range for each height. For example, at 5'9" (175 cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 125โ€“168 lbs (57โ€“76 kg). This is a wide range โ€” your optimal weight depends on muscle mass, frame size, and overall health markers.

Does frame size affect ideal weight?

Yes. People with small frames should aim for the lower end of their healthy range, while large-framed individuals can healthily be at the upper end. A simple frame-size test: wrap your thumb and middle finger around your opposite wrist. If they overlap, you have a small frame; if they just touch, medium; if they don't meet, large.
